The first anthology of its kind, Everywhere Is Her Altar: Romani Writers in North America showcases the work of twenty-seven Romani writers from Canada and the United States. Through poetry, fiction, memoir, and essays, the collection challenges stereotypes and celebrates the diverse voices, histories, and lived experiences of Romani communities.

Historical oppression, segregation, and anti-Roma racism have shaped diverse traditions, dialects, religions, occupations, and social identities within Romani communities. This diversity is reflected in the contributors to this anthology, whose experiences and relationships to Romani culture vary widely across generations, backgrounds, and communities.

This collection features Romani writers narrating their lived experiences through fiction, memoir, life writing, poetry, and essays. The works explore identity, family, love, memory, history, racism, migration, belonging, and the search for cultural roots. Together, they offer a rich and nuanced portrait of Romani life in North America while illuminating universal questions about heritage, resilience, and self-discovery.

Oksana Marafioti is an award-winning Romani American writer, editor, and educator. She is the author of the memoir American Gypsy (FSG) and has published essays in TIME, The Rumpus, and the Los Angeles Times. Her work centers Romani voices, storytelling, and cultural representation.

Cynthia Lauer (formerly Levine-Rasky) was a professor of sociology at Queen’s University until her retirement. Her ethnographic research at the Toronto Roma Community Centre led to the monograph, Writing the Roma (Fernwood, 2016). With Hedina Tahirović-Sijerčić, she co-edited A Romani Women’s Anthology: Spectrum of the Blue Water (Inanna, 2017).
